Which software and services can I use to run a German balancing group?
Short answer: It depends on who you want to hold the BRP role. If someone else should hold it, you need BRP-as-a-Service. If you hold it, you need a platform for scheduling, market communication and settlement, and possibly a separate trading system. Software alone never makes you a BRP.
Three categories
Category | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| BRP-as-a-Service | Holds or runs the balancing group for you: scheduling, settlement, imbalance management | n:lead (on the Engrate platform), managed services from utilities and service companies |
| Platform for your own balancing group | Scheduling with the TSOs, market communication, MaBiS settlement data, imbalance monitoring; you keep the BRP role | Engrate (API-first), established energy-industry software vendors |
| Trading and risk systems (ETRM) | Trades, positions, risk, often with links to scheduling | ETRM and portfolio management vendors |
How to combine them
Your situation | Typical setup |
|---|---|
| Enter Germany fast, minimal own operations | BRP-as-a-Service |
| Hold your own BRP role, no TSO integrations of your own | Own balancing group contract + API platform |
| Trading desk with automated execution | ETRM + API platform for scheduling and settlement |
| Electricity supplier | Supplier and market communication suite + balancing group platform |
Five questions to ask every provider
- Who is the BRP? You, or the provider?
- TSO connectivity: all four control areas, including nominations, renominations, acknowledgements and anomalies?
- Imbalance: who watches the open position, who corrects it, who pays the remaining imbalance?
- Pricing: subscription, per MWh, fixed fee, spread, or a mix?
- Operations: who covers incidents, settlement checks and disputes, and when?
Our answers
Question | Engrate (platform) | n:lead (BRP-as-a-Service) |
|---|---|---|
| Who is the BRP? | You. Engrate is your IT service provider. | Either: n:lead's partner PowerHive holds the balancing group and you trade in a sub balance group per control area, or you keep your own balancing group and n:lead runs it. |
| TSO connectivity | All four German TSOs: schedules, renominations, acknowledgements, anomalies | Through Engrate, all four TSOs |
| Imbalance | You keep the position; Engrate monitors and alerts | n:lead forecasts and monitors the imbalance cost; you pay the actual imbalance cost, passed through monthly |
| Pricing | Annual platform fee plus a fee per product and market (scheduling, settlement) | Fixed monthly fee; imbalance at actual cost |
| Operations | You run the balancing group. Engrate runs the platform and the TSO connections, with support in business hours (CET/CEST) and on-call for failures that stop nominations | n:lead runs it daily: schedules, rejections and clearing, contact with the TSO desks, and a monthly report |
How Engrate does it
Engrate is an API platform for German market access. Schedules for all four TSOs, market communication in the current format version, MaBiS settlement data and imbalance monitoring, all through one API, so your own trading and portfolio tools stay in charge.
